A Scientometric view of some Biological disciplines in Chile Biol. Res.

During the last decade the articles published by Chilean Research Centers grew 1,73 which compares to the 2.34 fold increase of mainstream research articles registered as a whole in Latin America. However, the relative impact of the Chilean publications surpassed that of Latin America. In Biological Sciences, traditionally the strongest research area within Chile, Latin America also shows a steeper slope of growth. Qualitatively, biological disciplines in Chile are comparable to those published in Latin America although in Chile there are specialties as Physiology that surpass the average world's impact. A SEARCH FOR CORRELATIONS BETWEEN SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURES AND OPTICAL REFLECTANCES IN CHILE AND BRAZIL DERIVED FROM AVHRR/NOAA IMAGES Gayana

A search is made for indicators of the presence of phytoplankton, using satellite images of the Pacific (Central Chile) and Atlantic (South Brazil). AVHRR/NOAA-16 and -17 visible (1 and 2) and thermal (4 and 5) channels were used to perform a detection test, respectively, the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) and the Sea Surface Temperature (SST). In Brazilian waters, a positive correlation is found between SST and SPM's reflectance. This is interpreted as due to phytoplankton being more abundant in colder waters, where nutrients availability are higher because CO2 dissolution rates, thus being a favorable environment for phytoplankton contents, which when mixed with SPM, tends to reduce the total water reflectance, since organic matter causes absorption...

Estradiol accelerates oviductal embryo transport in the rat through changes of genomic expression in oviductal cells. However, the genes involved are unknown. We used a differential display by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to detect estradiol (E2)-dependent genes in the rat oviduct. Mechanical pressure plays an important role in many physiological and pathological processes. Mimicking the mechanical pressure present in vitro is necessary for related research, but usually requires expensive and complicated equipment. In this study we created a simple pressure culture system based on the transwell culture system. By cutting off the top rim of the transwell insert, the cells were compressed between the insert membrane and the well floor. Background Thermostable DNA polymerase (Taq Pol ?) from Thermus aquaticus has been widely used in PCR, which was usually extracted with Pluthero's method. The method used ammonium sulfate to precipitate the enzyme, and it saved effort and money but not time. Moreover, we found that 30-40% activity of Taq Pol I was lost at the ammonium sulfate precipitation step, and the product contained a small amount of DNA. Results We provided a novel, simplified and low-cost method to purify the Taq Pol ? after overproduction of the enzyme in Escherichia coli, which used ethanol instead of ammonium sulfate to precipitate the enzyme. A simple ethanol wash of the tissue homogenates recovers high-quality genomic DNA from Corchorus species characterized by highly acidic and proteinaceous mucilages Electron. J. Biotechnol.

A simple miniprep based on early elimination of highly acidic and proteinaceous mucilages through ethanol washing of the tissue homogenates has been developed for the extraction of genomic DNA from mature leaves and seeds of Corchorus spp. As compared to high cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-NaCl DNA extraction followed by ethanol-based removal of remnant mucilages from the DNA pellet, this simple miniprep consistently and reproducibly recovers high amounts of DNA with good spectral qualities at A260/A280 and A260/A230. The purified DNA is efficiently digested by restriction endonucleases, and is suitable for PCR amplification of nuclear microsatellites with expected allele sizes.

For studying genetic diversity in natural populations of Terminalia, a medicinal plant, our attempts to isolate high quality DNA using several previously reported protocols and even modifications were unsuccessful. We therefore combined CTAB based isolation, and column based purification step, to isolate DNA from Terminalia arjuna. The DNA isolated using this standardized protocol was high in quality and suitable for restriction digestion and generation of random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP).
